FAQ
Common questions answered.

Do you take my insurance?
I am out of network with insurance plans and I do not bill Medicare or Medicaid. If your plan covers out-of-network care, I can give you a monthly receipt to send to it.
What is a superbill and how do I use it?
A superbill is an itemized monthly receipt that you may send to your plan to ask for reimbursement. It carries a diagnosis code, which your plan will see. Your plan decides whether it pays you back, and how much.
What is a Good Faith Estimate?
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of your costs before care starts. If a bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.
How much does it cost and how do fees work?
I give you my fee in writing before you book, and there is nothing to pay until you decide to begin. The page on how fees work covers insurance, receipts, estimates and cancellation.
Can I use an HSA or FSA card?
Usually, yes. Many health savings and flexible spending cards work for therapy sessions. Check with your plan administrator if you are unsure.
What happens in the first session?
We talk about what you want from therapy and how you like to work. You decide how much to share. We agree on a next step before you leave.
How often will we meet, and for how long?
Sessions are 50 minutes, usually weekly or every other week. Your clinician sets the pace with you, and we review it as we go.
Are you licensed where I live?
I am a licensed psychologist in California. I see clients in person in San Francisco, and by video if you are in California when we meet. I cannot see clients who are in other states.
What do I do in a crisis?
Call or text 988, any time, or call 911 in an emergency. This practice is not an emergency service, and messages sent through this website are read on weekdays.
What is private, and what are the limits?
What you say in session stays private, with exceptions the law requires, such as a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, abuse of a child or dependent adult, or a court order. I explain these in the first session.
Can you see my teenager?
I see adults only. If you are looking for care for a teenager, write to me and I will suggest where to look.
What is your cancellation policy?
I ask for 24 hours of notice to cancel or move a session. A late cancellation may be charged at the session fee, and I use judgment when something unavoidable comes up.
